You are planning to make curtains and can’t decide which fabric to buy. There are a myriad of choices, depending upon where you are hanging them and the look you wish to achieve. Let’s go through some of the possibilities.
For your kitchen you might want to choose a lightweight woven or printed curtain fabric with a “kitchen” theme, i.e., vegetables, apples, pies or roosters. If you collect a particular item you could pick up that theme in your curtains. Another choice is gingham or plain broadcloth in whichever color you wish to emphasize. You could also choose to go with a heavier woven fabric such as twill or weaver’s cloth to make a cornice across the top of the window.
Into the baby’s room – such a fun room to decorate. Curtain fabrics for this room can run from a sheer organza (more for a girl) to the plethora of choices in baby designs, calico prints, or again, solid broadcloth. There are themed character fabrics that may be used in addition to the above. If the amount of light coming into the room isn’t a factor than a lighter color fabric can be chosen. To darken the room choose a darker, or heavier fabric that is tightly woven.
The bedrooms can use fabric from organza sheers to heavy weight drapery fabric, or both. The organza would be utilized for “sheers” to be hung by themselves or under other heavier fabrics. For the outer curtains you can use twill, “home decorator”, velvet (velveteen) or for the truly elegant silk or satin.
As you can see there are so many choices for your curtain fabrics. Look at window treatment books, ask those who work in fabric at a given store, and use your own imagination to lead you to the perfect curtain fabric.
