Garden Edging gives a defined separation between your gardens and your lawn. It keeps the grass from growing into the garden and prevents weeds from invading garden spaces. There is a variety of garden edging for your garden materials that can be used to keep the yard looking manicured and beautiful. One method of making a garden edge only requires two things; a spade and a great deal of energy on your part. A spade is a shovel that has a slightly pointed tip. Start by standing in the garden and pushing the tip of the spade at an angle toward the edge of the garden digging at an angle toward the grass in the yard. Make sure to break the earth at least 5 inches below the surface. Then stand over on the grass and do the same thing at the edge of the grass at an angle toward the garden. You have made a V shaped trench. Remove any loose earth that might be in the trench and continue around the garden. You can rent a machine that will do the same thing and require much less energy from you and it will take much less time as well.Just edging a garden lasts about a year. You may have to go over it again by the middle of the summer just to get some of the grass out that has wandered into the trench. If you wish for something a little more permanent you can install other edgings made of wood, plastic, metal or stone.Wood edging can be purchased in pieces that are shaped to fit garden beds. It is possible to make custom wood edging using 2 by 4 wood but be sure that the wood has been treated so that it will not rot within a few years. Just dig a trench around the garden bed and put the 2 by 4 in it standing on the edge connecting it with other planks in a square or rectangular shape. Railroad ties were very popular in garden edging and still are. Ties can be stacked to raise a flower bed and all you need is the railroad ties and some metal bar to keep them in place. The only problem with wood edging is that gardens have to have a square or rectangular shape.Curving gardens can be edged with plastic edging easily. It will even accommodate round gardens. The plastic is usually black and rigid and snaps together as you go down the garden. There is a rounded top edge and a sharp bottom edge. The sharp part is thrust into the ground and the round protrudes above the ground. Grass and weeds cannot travel through the plastic to get into the garden. You can also find edging made of metal that will do the same thing. Plastic edging can become dislodged but lasts a long time. Edging made of metal tends to rust after a few seasons.Probably the most ancient of the edgings is stone.
