Equestrian sports have been popular for thousands of years and until recently, they served to develop skills, which were useful in war, in hunting, for herding domestic animals, in communication and in travel. Today with the advent of machines, they are no longer so necessary for practical results, but they have lost none of their appeal as an attractive sport. Equestrian vacations have become extremely popular, partly because so many parts of the developed world no longer have paths open which can be used by horses. Roads, fences and housing developments have closed much of the US to equine travel and those who live in or near big cities are often reduced to arena riding for want of wide-open spaces.

New Yorkers are not the only ones who have to travel miles to find places where they won’t be crowded off the trails by bikers and hikers, but fortunately, there are still some parts of the world where riders can gallop freely for miles without the risk of traffic or any signs of civilization. Wyoming, for instance, is ideal horse country and the density of population in New Jersey is about 250 times great than that of Wyoming. This means that it makes a great deal of sense these days to take your equestrian vacations in a place like Wyoming where horses can live a more natural life and people can ride them freely almost everywhere.
