It’s felt in a significant amount of companies that, so long as every last member of staff has basic health and safety instruction, they are well prepared to cope with an emergency. Realistically though, staff should have more than the basics in safety regulations and risk assessment. Equipping your employees, employing an enthusiastic supervisior and facillitating regular safety drills are essential to the safety at work. An individual in a supervisory capacity has an even greater role to play than simply general management. Whomever you select as the supervisor is required to see their health and safety training as important and have the ability to get other people excited about it. In addition to checking conformity with health and safety legislation, a supervisor’s role also usually includes maintaining employee performance levels. Naturally it’s tough to do all this at once. In-depth business knowledge is an essential in a supervisory position as well as an in-depth experience with the latest legislation involving safety, risk assessment and first aid.

It simply is not sufficient to offer your staff health and safety instruction. To effectively find a hazardous area they require practical experience. They also require insights into the steps necessary to remedy the situation not to mention how best to cope if the unexpected happens. Only when these processes have developed into second nature are workers totally protected. Instruction is in fact not sufficient if you don’t purchase the necessary safety apparatus. If they are lacking the items that is needed, or find out that they’re broken when they really need them, the education they have undergone will have been essentially of no benefit at all. It is important to perform conscientious checks frequently to ensure that you have all of the necessary apparatus as well as checking that it is all in a good state of repair. If you find your equipment is not in perfect condition, make sure it is repaired or call out a service engineer as quickly as possible. Appropriate health and safety training is essential for the well-being of your personnel, but they require decent equipment, the chance to practise, and a knowledgeable supervisor who can get employees charged up about being healthy at work. Only then will adopting health and safety legislation will be a natural component of working life and no longer something for staff to remember.
