Walk into your local city very early in the daybreak and you’ll see a number of applied road sweepers out and about tidying up the mess strewn around by all the shenanigans of last night. It’s a typical early morning setting, particularly the beeping noise! We don’t really give litter a consideration as we assume it will all be picked up for us.

Still, there is a subtle yet substantial influence litter has in terms of controlling the mood of people. Individuals are more likely to believe an area is lacking law and order if litter is strewn around, and thus felons see litter as a latent signal for an opportunity of a break-in, a mugging, or car-theft. The same signal develops some fear in other individuals who are concerned they may be walking into a more unsafe location and are concerned about possibly being attacked.

There’s also the impact on the visual appeal of a neighbourhood. Litter lying around can give the visual aspect of a place looking a bit derelict even though it’s just been “abused” by people from the night before. This can harm the reputation of an area if people are only within the location for this specific time and only discover it in its disheveled state.

There’s no purpose to throw litter if there are unfilled litter bins within the neighbourhood. If there are no rubbish bins, or the bins that are there are brimming, this is a problem to address the local council with. Throwing rubbish has a negative influence on everyone.
