This summer, we wanted to spend our vacation closer home, in the Caribbean because we wanted the comfort of knowing that we could fly back home quickly anytime if one of our ailing parents needed us for help. We chose to go to theTurks and Caicos Islands as a lot of our friends who are divers and snorkelers had talked about their wonderful diving experiences in these islands.
We booked our accommodation in Turtle Cove Inn which had a tie -up with a local dive center and tour operator for snorkelers and divers. We checked with the operator and arranged for a single day’s dive initially. We wanted to check out how many snorkelers and divers there were in each trip and also the quality of the service. I must say that we were quite impressed. The boats were not at all crowded, and the staff seemed to know the sites around the islands like the back of their hands. I could see the instructors pay special attention to those snorkelers and divers who were novices and help them set their own pace.. More experienced divers like us were paired off with their dive buddy and allowed to plan and dive on our own with helpful hints about the best sites and the not-to-be-missed features.
Be prepared to be amazed by the clear waters and the exotic variety of sponges and corals that you get to see here.. Diving near shipwrecks like Endymion and snorkeling near Turtle Cove in Smirth’s Reef were unforgettable experiences for us.. We enjoyed the pleasant cool waters and the warm sunny weather with plenty of long walks on the beach and early morning swims in the sea.
Among the dive sites in the Turks and Caicos are:French Cay, Northwest Point and West Caicos where we saw some truly colorful and vibrant sea sponges and fish. We plan to go back next year in time to see migrating whales, sharks and dolphins in the Columbus Channel..
