The Value of Checking

Although some poker online players deride checking as weak play, it is the only way to get to see free cards after the flop. Free cards are good when you are on a draw; and risky if you already have a made hand, which is why players bet – to keep others from getting free cards.
Some Everest Poker FR players will never allow a free card and always bet. This attitude can lead to trouble though because if another player has a monster, it allows that player to slow play by calling.
Checking is also good defense against re-raising and the dreaded check-raise. An Everest Poker player who raises pre-flop, then checks may have missed but could simply be disguising hand strength too with the intention of check-raising.
Checking lets you avoid traps. It is a strong defense against tricky players. Checking while you are on a draw is often the most prudent move to make.
When you check, you can save yourself some chips that can be used later. Don’t raise the pot any time others have checked in front of you just to be intimidating. It won’t work if done habitually. Recognize when the opportunity to draw for free comes your way and take advantage of it.
