The sandwich effect is a poker online theory that is closely related to the gap concept. As a quick refresher for those who don’t remember, the gap concept is a concept explaining how much more a poker online player needs to bet if they don’t open. The sandwich effect relates to what a player needs to have in their hand to stay in the pot. Unlike the gap concept, the sandwich effect has to do with the actual cards in your hand, not what you need to bet. It states that you need a comparatively stronger hand if there are players behind you in the playing order. According to the sandwich effect, you need a strong hand in order to survive in the poker game because you don’t know what cards the other players may be holding. Because there is a strong element of uncertainty, you cannot really stay in the game if you only have an average hand. There is no way to accurately calculate the pot odds in this situation, so the sandwich concept comes into play. Calculating the odds is the basis of good poker play, so the only way to be a strong player in this situation is to make sure that there are no possible odds that could beat the cards in your hand.
